Google SearchWIKI – Search Results Your Way

posted by Jason McElweenie
Friday, November 21, 2008

Google recently released a tool that puts you in the drivers seat when it comes to searching on their site, SearchWIKI. SearchWIKI allows you to customize your search results so you can ‘promote’ listings to the top where they are easier to find.

From the Google Blog

Have you ever wanted to mark up Google search results? Maybe you’re an avid hiker and the trail map site you always go to is in the 4th or 5th position and you want to move it to the top. Or perhaps it’s not there at all and you’d like to add it. Or maybe you’d like to add some notes about what you found on that site and why you thought it was useful.

Let’s break it down;

I did a search for SearchWIKI and got the following results:

searchwiki1

Hovering my mouse over an arrow on the right of a listing I am given the option to promote it to the top if I want

searchwiki2

Once I promote it Google sends it to the top of the natural or organic search results

searchwiki3

Google denotes this with a green arrow. Promote the wrong listing? Just click the down arrow and it will return to it’s normal position.

It doesn’t stop there though. If you want to leave yourself a note on why you like this listing you can leave yourself comments which are kept in your SearchWIKI activity(must be signed into Google).

searchwikicomment

Google allows you to keep track of all your SearchWIKI activity and to see other peoples activity on any given search result

searchwiki4

You can also remove sites from search results by simply clicking on the X beside the arrow. Want to add a result? Simply click on the ‘Add a result’ link to add a site to this page.

This is an interesting feature that can help you tailor your search results to fit your needs, allowing you to promote listings that you regularly visit, remove sites you don’t like and add sites that didn’t make the cut.

SearchWIKI – “Will This Hurt My Business?"

As a business owner or advertiser this doesn’t mean that regular people now have control over Google’s search results, this function manipulates only the search results of that user and in no way will increase or decrease your listing in Google. This also does not affect Google’s AdWord or PPC advertising in anyway.

SearchWIKI – Your New Online PR Tool

Even though this tool will not affect your website rankings in anyway you can however monitor your site listing and see if anyone has commented on it. Check to see if you have any positive or negative feedback and act accordingly.

As this is a new function comments are pretty limited but this is a good tool to measure your online PR.

SearchWIKI – Sign Us Up

Overall it’s a pretty interesting idea that gives the end user a little more flexibility in what they want to see and ultimately share with others. It should be an interesting concept to visit in a year to see how it went

BlogGangSign Ok, so we’ve all been there; stuck in lines at the grocery store, standing by the water cooler, talking to our Grandparents. Every thing is fine and dandy one moment and then your confidence sinks: Grandma mentions her blog and asks if you have one too. I don’t know how many times it’s happened to me. No one likes getting schooled by Grandma so Schipul to the rescue!

Schipul Blog Design and Hosting

We have started offering Blog design and hosting to help you get your feet on the ground. It’s fast and easy to do and you get the same great Schipul service and expertise. Plus you can become the beacon of information that may one day take down a respected journalist.*

Don’t believe me? Check out the Schipul Blog for more info

“71 percent of all journalists get stories from bloggers,” said Dallas Lawrence at the Central Michigan PRSA Social Media event on November 14th.

Hold the presses! If your voice is worthy of making headlines, why isn’t Schipul helping you make your voice heard?

Now I know blogging does sound a bit dirty to the untrained but the power of it in terms of SEO is really amazing. Some of our clients blogs generate the most referral traffic to their regular site than search engines.

So think of your blog as a door to door salesperson only without the overcoat and jaded disposition.

We do provide Blog training as well, in fact we had one today. Were you here? If not you can read about here on the Schipul Blog

So remember, don’t let Granny school you in the ways of the blog and once you have your blog up and running maybe you can try your hand at a mashup challenge with Granny Teller below;

Yang Out As Yahoo! CEO. Where’s Guy Kawasaki?

posted by Jason McElweenie

yangfilo1994Cue the fat lady – Jerry Yang is stepping down as Yahoo!’s CEO. The cofounder of the company is stepping in down in what could be called an off year.

As regular readers of this blog can attest Yahoo! has had more downs than ups this year and the resigning of Yang is no big surprise.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yang will ‘stay on as a senior executive and board member

What does this mean for Yahoo!, only time will tell but I’m sure Icahn and Microsoft are sharpening their fangs once again.

In the meantime the announcement of Yang stepping down sent the stock of Yahoo! soaring. TechCrunch reports that Yang is Yahoo!s $1.8 billion man.

So many questions to answer over the next little while and I think one that should be answered is – Guy Kawasaki are you ready to take the job this time?
