Microsoft has just launched their Search and Give program where it will donate a penny to a charity each time you use this search page to do a search.

How does this work?

  2. Sign in (or create a new account)and choose a charity you’d like to help donate to
  3. Start searching from the Search and Give home page

Microsoft Live Search will make a donation each time each time you use this page to search, up to 500 searches per month per person.

Microsoft to Yahoo: I Think We Should See Other People

The ongoing saga of the search engine world seems to have ended, briefly.

iStock_000004372512XSmallMicrosoft announced over the weekend that it is withdrawing its bid to acquire Yahoo ending its 3 month dance with the second most popular search engine. In a letter released on PR Newswire CEO Steve Ballmer cites Yahoo’s AdWord deal with Google as a factor for the deal falling through.

Ballmer states that Yahoo ‘pursuing a new arrangement that would involve or lead to
the outsourcing to Google of key paid Internet search terms… …would make an acquisition of Yahoo! undesirable.’

Ballmer goes on to give reasons such as; ‘it would fundamentally undermine Yahoo!’s own strategy and long-term viability by encouraging advertisers to use Google’ over its own Ad serving technology.’

I don’t think this is the end of the courtship though, it could be Microsoft’s way of devaluing Yahoo’s stock in an effort to take them over at a later, less expensive, date.

Where does that leave us?

Who knows. Maybe Google and Yahoo form another company and try to buy Microsoft, now that would be funny

Microsoft to Yahoo! Employees – We Want You to Stay

posted by Jason McElweenie
Wednesday, April 30, 2008

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is to ‘Devote $1.5 Billion to Retaining Yahoo Employees.’ WSJ reports that the ‘plan was revealed in court transcripts regarding a suit by shareholders against Yahoo’s directors.’ According to the report Yahoo directors are being sued by shareholders . They ‘feel that Yahoo hasn’t responded in good faith to Microsoft’s bid.’

iStock_000004123693XSmallAnd so continues the ongoing saga of the search engines. For those keeping score at home that puts the Yahoo price anywhere between 45.5 to 47 billion and that really is chump change isn’t it? Is there anyway that that could have a trickle down effect for those of us that advertise on both Microsoft and Yahoo’s ad platform? That brings up a good question, once this takeover is finished with will we have ONE interface at which to edit our campaigns for both MSN & Yahoo? No official word yet.

One thing we do know is Microsoft has it’s check book open and their pen is cocked

Keeping Up with the Search Engines

Yahoo! and Microsoft continue their game of chess concerning Microsoft’s unsolicited takeover proposal of Yahoo! on January 31 2008. News came out of Yahoo! yesterday that they are projecting to ‘roughly double operating cash flow over the next three years.’ This news was apparently presented to the Yahoo! board of directors back in December of ’07 a month or so prior to the Microsoft ‘offer.’

From Yahoo’s official Shareholder report.

They state numbers considerably larger than Wall Street projection.

"Yahoo! is positioned for accelerated financial growth." States Yahoo! CEO Jerry Yang.

Let the games begin!

Who knows when this will all be over and in the meantime it won’t really make that much of a difference for those that are running PPC. Many people fear putting money into Yahoo!’s and MSN ad platforms and this will only continue until this one has been played out. One thing we do know is that competition is good and if MSN needs Yahoo! to compete with Google we’re all for it, provided that they continue to offer services to help grow our businesses.

What’s Next for Search Engines and You?

For the smaller businesses out there wanting to run Pay-Per-Click and are not sure where to spend your money look to Marketshare for your answer until this chapter is over. Google still has an 80% marketshare of all search engines.

The Big Three and How They Are Doing

Below are screenshots of how Yahoo!, MSN and Google have been doing in the stock market the past 6 months.

MSN(MSFT) went up but have come back down to just above where they were six months ago.

Yahoo!(YHOO) stock was nosediving until the takeover news where it spiked.

Google(GOOG) on the other hand continues a downward trend since the beginning of ’08.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out
